Marine inboard engine, date unknown

H23” x W27.5” x D11”

Manufactured by The St. Lawrence Engine Co. Ltd., Brockville, Ontario. No. 5626. The engine is currently mounted on a finished wooden skid. The flywheel has six spokes. It was painted black in 2003 as the original finish was quite worn off. The carburetor has "THE SCHEBLER / INDIANAPOLIS IND" emboss cast. The engine is a single cylinder, 2-cycle inboard engine of about 3 H.P. The removable cast iron cylinder head has a central threaded spark plug hole and is secured to the cast iron, water-cooled cylinder by four head bolts. Water coolant is supplied (from a through-hull fitting) by a small bronze reciprocating pump, attached to the rear of the cylinder head and powered by an eccentric on the crankshaft. Coolant is expelled through the exhaust in marine fashion. Engine speed is controlled by adjusting the ignition timing via a bronze lever rotating about the crankshaft axis between the flywheel and the cylinder. Engine reversing is accomplished by cutting ignition until rotation has nearly stopped, throwing the timing lever to the opposite side of T.D.C. (top dead center) and then restoring ignition again. This substituted for a reversing gear for the propeller. Ignition is supplied by a vibrator-high tension coil and a six-volt battery. Lubrication: Cylinder---Gasoline and oil mixture 50: 1 Main Bearings--Grease Cups. There is a rectangular brass manufacturer's plate affixed: "The St. Lawrence Engine Co. Limited / No. 5626 / Brockville, Ont. Canada". There is no original gas tank with it--instead, there is a one-quart-sized Harrisons & Crosfield turpentine tin that has been recycled into a small tank by having a hose soldered to it. A "CHAMPION X" spark plug came with the engine. The spark plug's white porcelain area has orange-coloured lettering.
